Ransomware Recovery: A Small Business Planning Timeline

N4 PERSPECTIVE

Ransomware recovery involves more than bringing systems back online. For a small business facing the theft of personally identifiable information (PII), technical restoration must be coordinated with forensic investigation, breach counsel, notification obligations, and insurance requirements. This N4 Cyber Advisory infographic uses the SANS six-phase incident response lifecycle—Preparation, Identification/Analysis, Containment, Eradication, Recovery, and Lessons Learned—to show how these activities fit together. It combines that lifecycle with FTC guidance on business breach response and presents an illustrative planning scenario with safe, tested backups and experienced external responders. The 7–14-day operational recovery window is an N4 planning assumption; investigation, notifications, and claims may continue after operations resume.

Timing and scenario attribution: The 7–14-day substantial operational recovery window and 2–6+ month period for continuing investigation, notification and claims work are illustrative N4 scenario assumptions—not statistical averages, source-established benchmarks, guarantees, or legal deadlines. Actual timing depends on incident scope, backup integrity, system dependencies, available resources, and applicable obligations.
